Middle-aged men want to meet

The second season of the series “War of the Families” is not very different from the first. The audience, probably, understands that one should not expect some incredible twists and turns from the plot. It is unlikely that a chainsaw massacre will begin, a visit from aliens is also unlikely, and even jokes are likely to remain in the same fairway. Maybe this kind of stability attracts attention.

In the first season, the long-term friendship of Dima (Egor Beroev) and Misha (Alexander Robak) is being tested. The unexpected adultery of Dima and daughter Misha becomes a pretext for a heated inter-family conflict. In the second season, Misha also starts an affair with his daughter’s special age, and now his theory is bursting at the seams that a relationship between a girl in her early twenties and a man in his forties cannot be love.

The former wives (Olga Medynich and Svetlana Kolpakova) of the graying womanizers are also constantly nearby and sometimes behave like cats on a hunt. All this in the very sprawling interiors of villas near Moscow, where all the characters lead a rather strange life and, as it were, separated from such problems as work and salary.

No matter what they say, but misalliances, as a rule, invigorate any scenarios. In couples that are formed contrary to common sense, there is a semi-forbidden veil, besides, daddies, who are forced to get younger due to the prevailing amorous circumstances, give a lot of comedic scope. There are no complaints about the actresses who played young girls (Arina Postnikova and Angelina Strechina). They did a good job of moderately insidious, moderately sincere, moderately intelligent and very effective heroines. But the audience questions in the spirit of “do you need it?” immediately rained down on the stars in the roles of their gentlemen.

Even at the beginning of the first season, it became clear that if these jokes and these plot twists were entrusted to not so famous actors as Beroev and Roebuck, then the public’s attention would dissipate even before the final episode. However, star charisma also has a margin of safety, and, of course, there were doubts whether it would last until the end of at least the first season. In general, it was enough. But did it make sense to continue?

Both Beroev and Robak were lucky with projects, after which it would be better not to exchange for various knick-knacks. Of course, “Dyatlov Pass”, “Epidemic” or “Storm” are piece products, and between these, given the usual workload for popular actors, you need to act in something. Roebuck from such a routine often comes out dry. Maybe his acting approach, in which he plays almost all of his characters – whether it’s a goon dad, a hero in uniform or a corrupt cop – with about the same facial expression, is a very useful skill. Any of his heroes in one way or another evokes sympathy and seems to be his own on the board.

Everything is more complicated with Beroev. Sometimes it seems that it would be better for him not to leave the territory of historical dramas, and if he tries on a modern costume, then only in win-win cases. In The War of Families, he plays a nervous intellectual who has a piano and vinyl records at home. Quite a suitable type for an actor, but Beroev has very little chance to turn around. Local TV comedy is some kind of ruthless invention. Here, everything from a coherent plot to the full disclosure of the character’s character is easily sacrificed for a big laugh.

Can serious actors practice telling less than witty anecdotes? Of course, with whom it does not happen. But with this you need to be able to tie up in time. The seasoners laughed and returned to their serious business.

However, selectivity, conciseness and moderation live, of course, in an ideal cinema world. The local serial scheme was very accurately expressed by a psychologist, another hero of the War of Families. While bracing the ex-wives of the protagonists, he remarked, not without irony: “This is a different problem, a different consultation, and another ten thousand.”
