The production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) has been resumed as part of the Sakhalin-2 project, said Vitaly Markelov, deputy chairman of the board of Gazprom. Production has been suspended since July for preventive operations. Mr. Markelov noted that there are now no risks in terms of repairs and maintenance, despite the departure of the former operator of the Shell project.

The deputy chairman of the board of Gazprom noted that the plant provided an opportunity “to learn how to build and operate similar plants.” After Shell left in 2022, the Russian Sakhalin Energy “took over all the levers of managing this project.” “Today there are no risks in terms of repairs and maintenance,” added Mr. Markelov.
The top manager said that a booster compressor station was commissioned in 2023. “This allowed us to stabilize the pressure at the entrance to the LNG plant, accordingly increase costs (of gas – IF) and thus the design capacity of 11.6 million tons per year will be guaranteed,” Mr. Markelov said.
Under the Sakhalin-2 project, the Piltun-Astokhskoye and Lunskoye fields of the Sakhalin sea shelf are being developed. The LNG plant was commissioned in 2009. LNG is shipped to Japan, South Korea, China, Taiwan and Indonesia. After Shell left, Sakhalin Energy became the operator of the project. Its co-owners are Gazprom, Mitsui and Mitsubishi.
