Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev said that the Russian Federation with its vast expanses will not be able to do without supersonic civil aviation. He said that Russia already has experience in operating the Tu-144 supersonic aircraft and all the necessary developments to create a modern supersonic aircraft.
“Our country already has experience in relevant developments and, importantly, experience in operating the Tu-144 supersonic aircraft. Yes, this machine was ahead of its time, and today we have all the necessary developments to create such an airliner on a new technological basis,” the minister said as part of “Transport Week 2023” (quote from “RIA News”).
The Tu-144 is a supersonic passenger aircraft developed in the 1960s by the Tupolev design bureau. It was the Tu-144 that made the world’s first supersonic passenger flight on December 31, 1968. Commercial operation of the aircraft began in 1975 and ended in 1978.
Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly spoken about the need to create a supersonic passenger aircraft. In particular, with such a proposal he spoke when visiting the Kazan Aviation Plant in January 2018, as well as at meeting with representatives of the public in Kazan in 2019.
