Today, December 20, Ministry of Culture of Poland announced on the dismissal of the leadership of the state news agency PAP and TVP television channel. TVP broadcasting was suspended today. The Ministry of Culture said that the supervisory boards of PAP and TVP have been dissolved. In the near future, the ministry will form new councils that will appoint the leadership of these media outlets.

Critics of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, which has been in power in Poland for the past eight years, have repeatedly said that the PAP and TVP have become a vehicle for PiS propaganda. Last week, Donald Tusk, head of the Civic Platform, which has been an opposition party in recent years, became Poland’s prime minister. The multi-party coalition that backed Mr Tusk had previously promised to create new state media with a more balanced approach.

Yesterday, the Polish parliament passed a resolution calling on “all public authorities to immediately take measures to restore constitutional order with regard to access to reliable information and the operation of state-owned media.” It was this decision that the Ministry of Culture referred to.

Former Deputy Minister of Justice of Poland and member of the Polish Sejm from PiS Marcin Romanowski filed a statement with the prosecutor’s office, believing that by making this decision, the Minister of Culture and other employees of the ministry committed a crime. “The illegal action of the Minister of Culture against TVP, Radio Poland and PAP shows how authorities who supposedly care about the rule of law violate it at every turn,” said former Polish Prime Minister and PiS MP Mateusz Morawiecki.

Last week there were sent resignation of the heads of all five intelligence services in Poland.
