The number of retail investors on the Moscow Exchange exceeded 30 million – Kommersant

At the end of January, the number of individuals who have brokerage accounts on the Moscow Exchange (MOEX: MOEX), amounted to 30.2 million, reported press service Moscow Exchange. The trading platform clarified that the number of brokerage accounts opened by individuals in January reached 53.3 million, transactions were concluded by 3.7 million private investors in the first month of 2024.

The press release states that the share of individuals in stock trading was 76%, in bond trading – 32%, in the spot currency market – 13%, in the derivatives market – 67%. The total volume of investments by private investors on the Moscow Exchange increased in January 2024 compared to January 2023 by 18%, to 63.4 billion rubles. Of this amount, 43 billion rubles were invested in bonds, 8.1 billion rubles in shares, and 12.3 billion rubles in mutual funds, the press service reported.

The number of individual investment accounts (IIA) on the Moscow Exchange at the end of January 2024 amounted to 5.8 million. Turnover on IIA in the reporting month amounted to 208.6 billion rubles. 78% of this figure was accounted for by transactions in shares, 9% in bonds, 13% in mutual funds, the trading platform said in a statement.

According to the Moscow Exchange, in January the most popular securities among individuals were ordinary shares of Sberbank (they were in 30% of the portfolios of private investors), Gazprom (15%), LUKOIL (13.9%), Yandex (7.6% ) and preferred shares of Sberbank (7.1%) and Surgutneftegaz (6.2%), shares of Norilsk Nickel (6.2%), Rosneft (5.8%), Severstal (4.3 %) and “Magnit” (4.1%).

In 2023, on the Moscow Exchange, the share of private investors in stock trading volume averaged 79%, and in bond trading volume – 32%. At the same time, in December 2023, the share of individuals in shares fell to 72% – the minimum since the spring of 2022.
