From April 2022 to April 2023, the number of billionaires in the world increased by 7% – from 2376 to 2544 people, it follows from report UBS. And their total wealth, which had fallen by almost 20% the year before, increased over the reporting 12 months by 9% and now amounts to $12 trillion.
However, as the authors of the report note, if we take into account the global average inflation of 8.8% in 2022, the real welfare of billionaires has not changed compared to the previous year.
The report’s authors also note that for the first time in nine years of research, billionaires have accumulated the majority of their wealth not through entrepreneurial activity, but by inheriting money. During the reporting year, 53 heirs of billionaires received a total of $150.8 billion. At the same time, 84 people became billionaires on their own, but they earned a total of $140.7 billion. “We expect this trend to continue over the next 20 years, as more than 1 thousand billionaires are preparing to pass on about $5.2 trillion to their children,” said Benjamin Cavalli, head of systemically important clients at UBS Global Wealth Management.
