From January to September, Russians transferred more than 100 billion rubles to foreign brokers.

From January to September 2023, net transfers of funds from Russians to foreign brokers amounted to 101 billion rubles. The inflow of funds into foreign instruments is 741 billion rubles, follows from review financial stability of the Central Bank.

The Bank of Russia calls the risks of Russian investment flows abroad limited. At the same time, the regulator noted that purchasing securities through foreign brokers carries risks in the form of a lack of judicial protection and possible restrictions from other states.

The growth of Russians’ investments in foreign instruments has continued since 2020, the Central Bank added. A favorable factor against this background, as the regulator clarified, was the reduction in the volume of cross-border transfers by approximately half, to 1.5 trillion rubles.

As reported by the Central Bank, the number of visits to the websites of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges has decreased by 2% over the past six months. At the same time, the regulator noted an increase in transactions related to cryptocurrency to 82 billion rubles. on average per month (+54% in annual terms).

Bank of Russia on September 29 for six months extended restrictions on transferring funds abroad. Head of the Central Bank Elvira Nabiullina spokethat the idea of ​​such restrictions should be treated carefully so that business does not begin to circumvent them, as was the case in the late 1990s.
