According to The New York Times, the reductions will affect divisions that develop new devices, including the Alexa voice assistant, as well as retail and human resources divisions. The upcoming cuts come at the height of an important holiday sales season, the newspaper notes, indicating how seriously the worsening problems of the global economy are putting pressure on a corporation that has long retained an oversized workforce.
This year, Amazon’s growth was the slowest in two decades. The company’s costs skyrocketed, while changing consumer buying habits and rising inflation eroded its sales. Last week, Amazon shares fell to their lowest level since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Other major tech companies have announced cuts in recent weeks. So, Meta (recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation) will cut 11 thousand employees, or about 13% of the state. On Twitter, after Elon Musk bought it, they announced the reduction of half of the employees. Lyft, Stripe, Snap and many other companies are also laying off staff.
