The nuclear icebreaker of Project 22220, being built at a shipyard in St. Petersburg, was named “Stalingrad,” reports press service administration of the Volgograd region, words from the regional governor Andrei Bocharov.
Mr. Bocharov said at the plenum of the Volgograd Regional Veterans Council that the idea of naming the new nuclear icebreaker “Stalingrad” was supported by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Currently, three nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 have been built and are in operation – “Arktika”, “Sibir” and “Ural”. Icebreakers are built at the Baltic Shipyard shipyards in St. Petersburg. As part of Project 22220, the nuclear icebreakers Yakutia (2024) and Chukotka (2026) are being prepared to be put into operation. Plans also include the construction of the icebreakers Kamchatka (2028) and Sakhalin (2030).
