Japan wants to keep participating in the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects, said the new Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Yasutoshi Nishimura. The projects account for 9% of Japan’s LNG imports.
“There is no change in our policy of preserving interests,” the Nikkei minister said (quoted from TASS).
Japanese companies are major participants in the projects. Sodeco owns 30% in Sakhalin-1, Mitsui and Mitsubishi own 12.5% and 10% in Sakhalin-2. At the end of June, Russian President Vladimir Putin translated Sakhalin-2 operator to Russian jurisdiction, foreign shareholders must agree to accept shares in the new company within a month. In August Mr. Putin banned conduct transactions from investors from unfriendly countries with shares in the Sakhalin-1 project.
