From September 1, 2023, new export controls for semiconductor manufacturing equipment will come into effect in the Netherlands. This was announced today by the government of the Netherlands. How explained Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation of the Netherlands Elisabeth Schreinemacher, this was done “in the interests of national security”, since such equipment can be used by the military structures of other countries.
The adopted document does not indicate specific countries, as well as companies, however, given the previous statements and the plans of the country’s leadership, first of all, these restrictions are designed for China. From September 1, Dutch companies producing high-tech equipment for the production of semiconductors will need to obtain an export license.
In particular, the restrictions will affect one of the world leaders in the market of photolithographic machines used for the production of semiconductors, the Dutch company ASML. Now ASML is the most valuable European high-tech company with a market capitalization of €266 billion.
The Chinese embassy in the Netherlands has already reacted to the decision on restrictions, calling it “an abuse of export control measures” that violates trade rules. ASML shares on the stock exchange in Amsterdam after the news of the government’s decision fell by 1.5%.
