Analysts of the MTS Big Data Center, at the request of Kommersant, collected data on phones and smartphones registered on the network since 2008. For each year, the top 20 most popular models were presented. To create infographics, we summarized them by manufacturer and country to see the big picture. According to company data, in the late 2000s, Nokia phones were in greatest demand among Russians. The most popular models were the business class 6300 and the simplified 1100 (they took first and second places in the top 20).

Only the South Korean Samsung could compete with the Finnish manufacturer then. In 2010 and 2011, the top 20 was led by its budget model E1080. Although, in terms of the total amount of different models in the top twenty, the Koreans were still inferior to the Finns. Nokia’s share, however, gradually declined. After 2018, the phones of this manufacturer completely disappeared from the ranking. But Samsung continues to hold its positions, only smartphones have replaced push-button phones.

Smartphone from Apple first became one of the most popular in 2011 (it was iPhone 4). Since 2013, next-generation models have consistently ranked first in the top 20. But in terms of the sum of all models, the “apple” company was able to overtake Samsung only in 2016.

According to the latest data, the championship is still with the iPhone, but Asian competitors are pushing it. Apple products in the twenty of 2022 account for a third of the positions (7). The rest are Chinese (Xiaomi, Honor) and South Korean (Samsung Galaxy) smartphones.

It should be added that Russian models were among the most popular. In 2013 and 2014, the budget Explay Blade was in the top twenty.
