The Ministry of Transport of Russia proposes to increase the number of container trains in the east direction by three pairs per day until the end of 2022 by reducing coal transportation. This proposal was put forward by Minister Vitaly Savelyev at a meeting with President Vladimir Putin on 16 November. This decision will increase both imports and exports of export cargo, Savelyev explained. Now 15-17 pairs of container trains are sent to the Far East and back every day.
“The expected drop in shipments of thermal coal will be about 800,000 tons by the end of the year, or 1.4% of the annual volume, which we plan to deliver next year by April 15,” the Minister of Transport added (quoted by Interfax). This figure, “in principle, is agreed and absolutely painless,” said First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov. According to him, this decision will primarily affect Kuzbass, but taking into account the export of 26 million tons of coal from there in the III-IV quarters alone, 800,000 tons is a “small part”. This issue will be further worked out with shippers, Belousov emphasized.
