The Ministry of Transport has adjusted the schedule for the introduction of biometrics in transport – Kommersant

The Ministry of Transport intends to install systems for identifying passengers using biometrics at four transport infrastructure facilities in 2024. About it it says in the government-approved strategy for the digital transformation of the transport industry until 2030. It was originally planned that by the end of 2023, biometric entry would be launched at 6% of Russian airports (at least 12).

According to the updated strategy, in 2025 already 15 infrastructure facilities should use biometrics for admission, in 2026 – 70, by 2030 there should be 700 such facilities. However, only next year the Ministry of Transport intends to approve the methodology for calculating project indicators and select facilities to participate in German

The department confirmed RBCthat a number of digital transformation indicators have been adjusted. It is argued that “the reorientation of priorities for the digital transformation of the industry is associated with new challenges” facing the transport complex. Also, the change in timing is related to measures to use the unified biometric system (USS) for the implementation of the project, the press service of the Ministry of Transport added. They clarified that biometrics can be introduced not only at airports, but did not name other potential facilities.

The Ministry of Digital Development told RBC that first of all, the project to use biometrics will be implemented in the metro. In the future, the service is planned to be introduced on other types of transport.

How Kommersant reported, JSC Russian Railways, the Ministry of Digital Development and the Ministry of Transport are planning to conduct an experiment at the beginning of 2024 that will allow passengers on long-distance trains to confirm their identity using biometrics instead of checking passports. Suppliers of facial recognition systems note that to implement the project, Russian Railways will need a fleet of tablets.
