The Ministry of Industry and Trade reported on the complete import substitution of the production of aluminum cans

For a year in Russia, it was possible to completely replace the production of aluminum cans with imports. This was announced by Roman Chekushov, Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Licensing of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, on the air of Sputnik radio.
“We have substituted imports by 100% over the year. All aluminum cans on the shelves are now our production,” he said (quote according to RIA Novosti).
Chekushov noted that at the beginning of 2022, about 70% of all aluminum cans were American-made.
Against the backdrop of the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine in March last year, aluminum packaging manufacturer Ball Corporation informed on the reduction of operations in the Russian market and the search for a buyer for a local business.
In Russia, the company had three factories – in the Moscow, Leningrad and Chelyabinsk regions. By data According to Kommersant, Ball accounted for about 60–65% of all aluminum cans consumed by Russian companies. The rest was produced by Poland-based CanPack, which operates factories in the Moscow and Rostov regions, the newspaper wrote.
