The Ministry of Economy discusses the recognition of bananas as a socially significant product and the abolition of duties on them

The Ministry of Economy will work out the possibility of classifying bananas as socially significant goods. In addition, the authorities are considering the possibility of removing customs duties.
The Ministry of Economy received an instruction following a meeting of the government commission for economic development at the end of March, reports “News”. The protocol of the meeting, which the publication has read, was approved by First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov. At the same meeting, it was decided to consider the possibility of zeroing the customs duty rate for bananas. Now the base rate is 4%, but not less than €0.015 per kg.
The official list of socially significant goods now includes some types of meat, frozen whole fish, butter and sunflower oil, milk, eggs, sugar, bread, flour and other products. Regional authorities may, at their discretion, expand the list. The government can counteract the rise in prices of these goods by interfering with pricing if the price rises by more than 10% (excluding seasonal factors) for 60 consecutive days.
The Ministry of Economy did not promptly respond to a request for comment. Rospotrebnadzor said that it is considering a proposal to classify bananas as socially significant goods. “At present, this proposal is being worked out,” the department told Izvestia.
According to Rosstat, in April 2022, the cost of 1 kg of bananas was 115.2 rubles. In April 2023, the price increased to 129.5 rubles. The consumption of bananas in Russia is 9.8 kg per capita, which is more than the consumption of apples by 0.8-0.9 kg.
