The Ministry of Digital Development plans to completely disable 3G in Russia in 2027 – Kommersant

The shutdown of the third generation (3G) mobile communication network in Russia is planned for the period from 2027 to 2030 as part of the plan for the future use of radio electronic equipment (RES). This was announced by the head of the department of state regulation of the telecommunications market, Dmitry Tur, with reference to the plan of decisions of the state commission on radio frequencies.
“The commission approved a long-term use plan (RES) and developed a resolution that was submitted to the government. I think that by the end of the year it will be adopted,” said Mr. Tur (quoted from TASS).
He added that fixed wireless Internet access could be turned off in 2025. Official comments, he said, will appear after the publication of a public extract, which is expected to be ready this year.
Earlier, Mr. Tur said that the Ministry of Digital Development is holding discussions with the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) on the strategy for the development of the communications industry until 2035. It includes goals to switch off 3G in Russia and introduce 5G and 6G Ready networks by 2030.
In July, mobile operators MegaFon and VimpelCom claimed an increase in mobile Internet speed by 10–12% due to the transfer of frequencies for 3G to the 4G standard. Representatives of telecom operators interviewed by Kommersant believe that Internet speeds may begin to decline in 2024.
