Director Alexander Sokurov said that the Ministry of Culture has banned the screening of his film “Fairy Tale” at the international film festival “Karo.Art”, which will be held on October 15.
“We just received a message from Moscow: the Ministry of Culture has banned the screening of the film “Fairy Tale” on October 15 in Moscow at the international festival KARO.Art. Now we are trying to find out the motivation,” Mr. Sokurov wrote in his Telegram channel.
He suggested that “Fairy Tale” might have its distribution certificate taken away, and his other films might be subject to an “unspoken ban.” “I’m not just protesting against censorship, I’m protesting against the violation of my constitutional right to freely communicate my works with my compatriots,” the director concluded.
As the director himself said, “The Tale” is a fictional and fantastic story about the Second World War, and the main characters of the film – Hitler, Stalin, Churchill and Mussolini – meet in a place similar to purgatory or hell. The Tale premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in 2022.
