The head of the Ministry of Agriculture, Dmitry Patrushev, said during the All-Russian Wine Forum that the department supports the proposal to extend the 20% wine import duty until 2024. According to him, such measures reduce the number of sales of imported wine and allow the industry to develop better.
“We need to promote our domestic producers on the shelves, and we are ready to do this with you. I think we should initiate any protective measures that we can initiate so that we have as little imported wine as possible,” said Dmitry Patrushev (quoted by Interfax).
According to Interfax, the Union of Winegrowers and Winemakers of Russia came up with a proposal to extend the duty.
Earlier today, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade Viktor Evtukhov offered introduce amendments to Russian legislation, which will result in an increase in the share of domestic wine in restaurant wine lists. According to him, Russian wine should “take first place” in public catering.
In July 2023, the government increased duties on wine imports from unfriendly countries from 12.5% to 20%. In this case, the amount must be at least $1.5 per liter. According to Kommersant, in this regard, in the last month of summer, wine imports decreased by almost 30% year on year. In July, importers statedthat indexation threatens to reduce the quality of local wines due to lack of competition, as well as switch consumers to other types of alcohol.
