Russian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Marina Afonina said that the authorities were discussing the idea of placing quotas on wine imports. According to her, if such a proposal is received again, they are ready to consider it again.
“This issue (of quotas—Kommersant) was discussed. When we introduced and increased the (import – Kommersant) duty, there were different options, the discussion was quite heated – by how much to increase, there were opinions to ban it. But today we have all settled on this option – increase it and see what happens next. And then take some kind of next stage,” said Mrs. Afonina at the Russian Wine Forum (quote from “RIA News”).
In July, the government increased import duties on wine from unfriendly countries from 12.5% to 20%, but not less than $1.5 per liter until the end of 2023. On November 9, the Ministry of Agriculture advocated extending the increased import duty through 2024.
