The Ministry of Agriculture proposed to ban the export of certain types of poultry meat for six months

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation proposed limiting the export of certain types of poultry meat for six months against the backdrop of high domestic prices, such a draft resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers published on the portal of regulations. Earlier on October 25, President Vladimir Putin drew attention to the problem of high prices for chicken.

In justifying the need for this project, the department noted that a “significant” (+25.3% year-on-year) increase in domestic prices for certain types of poultry meat is associated with a decrease in production in Russia and an increase in costs due to the high dollar exchange rate. The current situation, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, contributes to the “excessive attractiveness” of supplies to foreign markets compared to domestic ones, which “creates a threat to food security” in Russia.

“In order to curb the rise in consumer prices for socially important products and prevent shortages, it is proposed to establish a temporary ban on the export of certain types of poultry meat outside the Russian Federation for a period of six months,” the document says.

Vladimir Putin spent October 25 meeting with members of the government via video conference on preparations for the winter season. During the event with a report spoke and Minister of Agriculture Dmitry Patrushev. The head of state asked him why poultry meat had increased in price by more than 27% since the beginning of the year. The government, the president added, must turn on “well-known mechanisms” in a timely manner, including purchasing meat from Belarus and Kazakhstan.

Patrushev noted that the department is dealing with this problem. “In August, directly in August, there was a slight decrease in production volumes, but if we take the period from January to August, then our production volumes are still growing,” he said. Products are already coming from Belarus and Kazakhstan to balance the market, the minister added.

The price fell for the first time since the end of June. Experts previously explained the rise in prices by the “physical shortage of volumes” of meat and the rush demand for it. Other reasons include production problems in certain regions and increased export volumes.
