A court in Poland approved the cancellation of fines for Gazprom and the companies that built Nord Stream 2

The Polish Court of Appeal overturned a fine of about 29 billion zlotys ($6.8 billion) to Gazprom and its five partners who built Nord Stream 2, the newspaper reports. Puls Business.
The fine was imposed on Gazprom and its partners in 2020 by the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (Polish antitrust regulator, UOKiK). UOKiK solution for the first time was canceled in November 2022 by the Polish Competition and Consumer Court. UOKiK promised to appeal the cancellation of the fine in the appeal court, and then in the Supreme Court.
Last year’s decision of the court for the protection of competition and consumer rights noted that Gazprom never created a joint venture with its partners, so assessing the economic consequences of their cooperation is beyond the responsibility of UOKiK.
In 2020, the Polish antitrust regulator accused Gazprom and its partners in the construction of Nord Stream 2 that the contracts concluded between them and Western financial investors were a concentration of business and an attempt to circumvent antitrust laws.
