Director of Corporate Relations and Communications of the Japanese Japan Tobacco International (JTI) Sergei Glushkov told reporters that the company decided to leave business in Russia. According to him, JTI does not want to “deprive consumers of the product they are accustomed to,” despite “the events of two years ago.” JTI produces cigarette brands Winston, Camel, LD, Sobranie, Mevius, and Russian Style.
Mr. Glushkov noted that the company does not plan to introduce new generation tobacco heating devices to the Russian market. “They also said that we reserve the right to make any decision and, naturally, we comply with all regulatory rules both in the Russian market and international rules,” he added (quoted by TASS).
JTI has been operating in Russia since the founding of the Japanese company in 1999, when Japan Tobacco Inc. acquired the international business of RJ Reynolds. In August, the National Agency of Ukraine for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP) contributed JTI to the list of international “war sponsors”. Then NAPC noted that the company’s share accounts for about 34.9% of the entire Russian tobacco market.
