The documentary film “Dahomey” won the main award of the Berlin Film Festival – the Golden Bear. The film by French-Senegalese director Mati Diop tells about art objects exported to France from the state of Dahomey that existed before 1900.

The jury was chaired by Kenyan-Mexican actress and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o. She became the first black chairman of the film festival. Ms. Diop said during the ceremony that the award honors not only her, but the entire “visible and invisible community that the film represents” (quoted by AFP).

The Silver Bear Grand Prix of the jury was awarded to South Korean director Hong Sang-soo (“Needs of a Traveler”). This is his fourth Silver Bear. The director received a similar award in 2020–2022. French director Bruno Dumont (Empire) won the Silver Bear from the festival jury.

The best director was Dominican Nelson Carlo de Los Santos Arias (“Pepe”), the best actor was American Sebastian Stan (“The Other Man”), the best supporting actor was British actress Emily Watson (“Such Little Things”), the best screenwriter was German director Matthias Glasner (“Death”). The honorary Golden Bear was previously awarded to director Martin Scorsese.
