The largest railway operators received a record profit of 226 billion rubles

The total net profit of the 18 leading freight car operators of the Russian Railways network in 2022 amounted to RUB 226.2 billion. Relative to the results of 2021, the indicator increased by 2.3 times. This is stated in the reporting of companies under RAS, which is cited by RBC.
More than half of the total net profit was provided by the four largest companies in terms of the number of freight cars. The net profit of the Federal Freight Company (FGK; a subsidiary of Russian Railways) increased 6.45 times to RUB 41.26 billion. According to the results of last year, the First Freight Company (PGC) increased its profit by 1.75 times, to 38.38 billion rubles, Modum-Trans – by 3.49 times, to 24.19 billion rubles, NefteTransService – by 5.38 times, up to 14.9 billion rubles. For these operators, net profit for 2022 was the largest in at least the last five years (since 2018), RBC notes.
The fleet of freight cars of the Russian Railways network has almost 1.3 million units. According to the Rollingstock Agency at the end of 2022, 8% of them were operated by FGK, 7.6% by Freight One, 5.3% by Modum-Trans, and 5.1% by NefteTransService.
Of the largest operators, only the National Transport Company, owned by the Russian coal mining holding SUEK, received a net loss. According to the results of 2022, it amounted to 2.47 billion rubles. The new transportation company completed last year with a net profit of 18.53 billion rubles, Atlant – 19.35 billion, TransContainer – 17.05 billion, and Gazpromtrans – 0.48 billion rubles.
After the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine, sanctions were imposed on Russian Railways. Due to restrictions, the company had to rebuild logistics. In April of this year, the head of Russian Railways, Oleg Belozerov, announced that the company had reduced the share of import purchases from 7% to 3% in 2022. In 2024, the company expects to receive completely domestic locomotives. The management of Russian Railways noted that the problem with the replacement of equipment that had ceased to arrive from abroad had been largely resolved. However, difficulties remain with some positions, primarily with bearings.
