“The hotel business only benefited from the departure of foreign aggregators”

Russian business has developed four strategies for adapting to work under sanctions. The study was conducted by the Higher School of Economics. The first approach involves cutting costs, investments, laying off employees and cutting down the range. The second way is to maintain investments, but at the same time simplify the products. The third strategy involves changing supply chains, searching for new suppliers of raw materials, materials and components. This usually requires changes in management and logistics. And the latest innovation strategy involves the development of new products and technologies, the introduction of digital solutions, as well as attracting qualified personnel and entering new markets.
“Kommersant FM” talked to players from different segments of the economy and found out that farmers had the hardest time, and vodka producers are going through the crisis the best:
Roman Saberzhanov, HotConsulting company, launches hotels: “One of the main problems we faced was, of course, sales of hotel services. Foreign online travel agencies were monopolists in this area. Russian hotels were tied to these resources and, in fact, lost access to them overnight. Now how to build marketing, how to reach the client if the client is already accustomed to those platforms? But today everything has changed. I would even say that the Russian hotel business has only benefited from the departure of foreign aggregators. The Russian hotelier began to receive significantly more, by 10-15%.”
Dmitry Matveev, owner of the Kabosh group of companies, produces signature cheeses and other products: “Six months before this whole situation, we bought equipment for almost $10 million. Naturally, we were counting on warranty service and the supply of spare parts. And now we have to buy parts three to four times more expensive. The main problem is that due to the fact that in Russia there is no such spare part, our combine harvester can be idle for a month or a month and a half, and in conditions of harvesting and preparing feed in the summer and autumn, this is actually like death. When we talk about agricultural machinery, this is a problem that cannot be solved by business alone; this requires government support.”
Pavel Pobedkin, owner of the Kristall distillery, produces vodka and liqueurs: “Components for the production of products are a label, a cork, a bottle, a box. All this is within the scope of Russian suppliers. Previously, in order to make some kind of beautiful label, it was necessary to purchase European raw materials, beautiful textured paper, and so on. When the special operation began, suppliers were forced to replace their supply chains and include a creative component, and learned to make for little money something that completely imitates expensive European raw materials. For us, this was a) a reduction in castes, b) a more interesting creative approach, which was proposed by the labelers themselves.”
According to the Higher School of Economics, sanctions affected at least two-thirds of Russian enterprises. 53% of companies felt a negative effect from them, and 7% of players noted positive aspects.
The most protected from the crisis were enterprises that were closed to the domestic market, Kommersant notes. The low level of competition is consistent with their idea of simplifying products. And the motivation for innovation, given the already increased demand after the departure of foreign competitors, is de facto absent.
