Attendance at the museum complex of the State Historical Museum (SIM) in 2022 amounted to more than 800 thousand people, said the director of the State Historical Museum Alexei Levykin in an exclusive interview with Kommersant. According to him, before the coronavirus pandemic, the attendance of the museum complex, which, in addition to the main building of the museum, includes, in particular, the Intercession Cathedral, the Museum of the Patriotic War of 1812 and the Romanov Chamber in Zaryadye, was about 1 million people a year. The share of foreign visitors decreased from 25% to 1.5% in 2022 and rose to 2.6% in the first half of 2023.
During the quarantine, the museum was closed, but developed online platforms – according to Alexei Levykin, after the restrictions were lifted, many users came to the museum to see the collection items. The director of the Historical Museum notes that attendance used to have seasonal peaks and valleys: “For example, due to important state events in April-May, attendance decreases … and increases in September, when Muscovites return after summer holidays.”
But against the backdrop of a change in the direction of tourist flows and the growth of domestic tourism, “this picture is changing”: “Last year we saw the traditional growth in December, on the eve of the Christmas and New Year holidays, at the beginning of the children’s holidays. But this time the effect did not disappear either at the end of January, or in February, or in March. This suggests that public interest in the history of the country is growing.” At the same time, the share of foreign tourists has significantly decreased: if in 2019 they accounted for 25% of all visitors, then in 2021, due to the pandemic, they became 4%, and in 2022, due to the beginning of the NWO, this number decreased to 1.5% . In the first half of 2023, foreigners made up 2.6% of visitors.
