Temporary shutdowns of 4G communications in the Leningrad, Pskov and Novgorod regions are technical measures, said Russian Minister of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev. He noted that similar restrictions are possible in other regions, but there are no plans to introduce them now.

Last week, the authorities of the Leningrad, Pskov and Novgorod regions announced that until January 30, 4G communications in the regions would be turned off at night. Journalists asked Mr. Shadayev to explain the reason for communication restrictions in the Northwestern Federal District. “These are technical events,” said the head of the Ministry of Digital Development (quoted by TASS).

When asked if similar shutdowns are planned in other regions of the country, Maksut Shadayev said: “Not yet, but it’s quite possible.”

According to Kommersant’s sources, technical work is being carried out by order of the Ministry of Digital Development for the needs of law enforcement agencies, in particular the additional adjustment of anti-drone systems. Experts have warned that due to the shutdown of 4G communications in the regions, problems may arise in the operation of video surveillance systems and payment processing.
