The head of the Human Rights Council under the President of the Russian Federation, Valery Fadeev, said that video games with “bad ideas” in the script should be banned.
“If bad ideas are put into the script, you just need to ban these games. We have a list of banned books, there is nothing bad here, we don’t burn these books,” Mr. Fadeev said at the round table “Computer games as a factor in national defense and security” as part of the Army-2023 forum (quote from RIA News”).
According to the head of the HRC, popular Western video games need a legal assessment. He said that games are a huge segment of the influence on the minds, so in Russia you need to find people who know how to make video games of the proper quality and content.
In 2022, the Ministry of Economy, together with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Digital Development and Roskomnadzor started to the development of a bill on the labeling of video games. In early July, Interfax, citing a source familiar with the document, wrote that the development was completed, the bill could enter into force in September 2025. According to the document, developers themselves will assign a rating to products, but then it will be checked by supervisory authorities. The criteria by which labeling should be established are not yet clear to market participants.
More details – in the material “You can’t escape the self-labeling of supervision”.
