The head of PepsiCo urged to make agriculture attractive

PepsiCo CEO Ramon Laguarta said big companies need to adopt new technologies to make their products more sustainable and that they can do so without raising prices to consumers. In his opinion, it is necessary to make agriculture attractive.
Mr. Laguarta raised this topic at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He described PepsiCo as “primarily an agricultural company” and said it buys 26 crops from 200 countries. The company’s top priority is to make these agricultural operations more environmentally friendly, he said. “If we don’t make agriculture attractive, there will be no next generation of farmers,” says Ramon Laguarta (quoted from The Wall Street Journal).
He explained that, for example, a bag of Lay’s chips (the brand is made by PepsiCo) can be made from organically grown potatoes in a plant with almost no carbon emissions, transported in an electric truck and sold for a price “no higher than a bag of chips produced in the usual way.” “We can transform a given supply chain end-to-end at no significant cost… My transportation option may be more expensive, but maybe I can save money by using less water in the factories,” Mr. Laguarta added.
Back in 2017 PepsiCo ordered 100 Tesla Semi trucks. The company said the trucks were being purchased to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
