The head of Global Parts announced the restoration of container turnover in the Baltic

The container cargo turnover of sea terminals in the ports of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region is gradually recovering after a fall in 2022. This was announced by the director of the Global Parts commercial group Igor Pukhov at the conference “The Market for Container Transportation of Industrial Cargoes”, Interfax reports.
Global Ports is the largest container terminal operator in Russia. The Group operates a network of seven multifunctional terminals in two sea basins – in the Baltic Sea and in the Far East.
According to Global Arts, in April 2023, the ports of St. Petersburg and Ust-Luga handled 91,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units). This is 52.6% of the average monthly transshipment volume at the same terminals in 2021 (173 thousand TEU).
The container turnover of the Baltic terminals reached its minimum volume in September 2022, when the ports of St. Petersburg and Ust-Luga handled 31,000 TEU. The recovery of the indicator began in October, until January 2023, the container turnover amounted to 50 thousand TEU per month.
According to Igor Pukhov, the recovery is due to the attraction of new sea container carriers to the north-west. To date, there are 14 container shipping lines in the mentioned ports, their composition has been updated by 80% over the year. Companies from Russia, China, and the Middle East replaced the departed operators. On May 2, Mr. Pukhov said that Global Ports plans to increase the container turnover of its terminals in the Baltic to 100-170 thousand TEU by the end of 2023
