The first Hermitage Prize was awarded to artistic director of the Mariinsky Theater Gergiev

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova presented the first Hermitage Prize to the artistic directors of the Mariinsky Theater Valery Gergiev and the ballet troupe of the Mikhailovsky Theater Juan Ignacio Duato Barcia. The ceremony took place at the Winter Palace in St. Petersburg.

“The Hermitage Prize was awarded as a sign of respect to outstanding cultural figures of our time who created their works not only here, but throughout the world. And we did it today with deep respect and admiration,” said Mrs. Golikova after the ceremony (quote from “Interfax”).

The presentation was also attended by Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova, Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov, and Director of the State Hermitage Mikhail Piotrovsky. The Hermitage Prize was established this year by the organizing committee of the St. Petersburg International Cultural Forum. It is awarded to iconic cultural figures from Russia and abroad.
