Several dozen people gathered at the Tbilisi airport at the moment when the first direct Moscow-Tbilisi flight after 2019 landed there. It was carried out by the Russian airline Azimuth. Protesters representing the opposition Droa party carried placards condemning the resumption of flights between the two countries.
The police did not let the demonstrators go directly to the airport building, when opposition activists nevertheless tried to break through there, the police detained six people.
At the same time, on the board itself, which landed at the Shota Rustaveli airport, the Georgian authorities staged a performance, the girls from the folk dance ensemble danced in the plane, welcoming the Russians.
Guests from the Russian Federation went through the passport regime, left the airport and dispersed around the city without any incidents.
Earlier, US Ambassador to Tbilisi Kelly Degnan expressed support for the protesters. According to her, the “concern” of the Georgian society is “understandable” to her, since “Russia is occupying the Georgian territories” – Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Clearly responding, among other things, to the statement of the American diplomat, Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili said at a briefing that Georgia “is not a member of NATO and a member of the EU”, therefore it does not intend to impose sanctions against Russia and refuse trade and economic ties with it.
On Friday, May 19, the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development issued permission to fly another Russian airline – Red Wings. It will operate Sochi-Tbilisi and Moscow-Kutaisi flights three times a week.
