The finale of “House of Dragons” revealed the intrigue of the second season

More heroes, battles and monsters

The split in the Targaryen clan is about to lead to civil war. Reynira, after the death of her son, realizes that nothing can be achieved by diplomacy. Nine not the most exciting episodes of “The House of the Dragon” ended with an episode full of passion, and now it is largely clear what will happen in the new season.

The dragon chase, filmed according to all the rules of an expensive horror, with its scale reminded of the most exciting episodes of the Game of Thrones. Even the most angry critics of “House of the Dragon” seem to have thawed and admitted that for the sake of such an ending, one could have yawned throughout the previous series.

In the prequel to Game of Thrones, fans of the genre certainly lacked what made the eight-season hit a project that in many ways turned series standards upside down. The “House of the Dragon” against the background of the “Game of Thrones” is not so bloodthirsty, cruelty and sexual violence are carefully measured here, and the emphasis is not on battles (they have not really begun yet), but on palace intrigues. And where there is intrigue, there are conversations that fantasy lovers perceive not with such pleasure as the clash of swords and blood flows.

A lot of spears were broken about the pronounced feminist line. In fact, the main characters in the “House of Dragons” are two women, between whom a struggle for the throne unfolded. They clearly do not want war, they are aware of the full responsibility of great power and generally look much more reasonable people than most male characters who think only of a greater massacre.

Revealing the images of Alicente and Reynira, the creators of the “House of Dragons” made an incredible frivolity. The heroes of George Martin’s books are not divided into positive and negative. They definitely have good features, but there are usually many more bad ones. However, as the story progresses, Rainier becomes perhaps the most positive heroine of the series, and the viewer’s sympathy should clearly be on her side. In the finale, her son is killed and Rainier seems to be ready to start a war also for personal reasons.

We can say that the first season of “House of Dragons” ends at the most interesting place. New heroes are introduced, the characters are revealed, the motivations for their actions are more or less clear, so the intrigue of the second season is served according to all the laws of dramaturgy. However, audience expectations do not always correspond to the intentions of the authors.

The details of the second season are still few, but some of them are quite interesting. In the summer of this year, it became known that the screenwriter and director Miguel Sapochnik would leave the project. It was he who, as a director, filmed several rather important episodes of Game of Thrones, as well as three episodes of House of Dragons. The position of showrunner has been retained by Ryan Condal, while Alan Taylor, who also worked on Game of Thrones, also remains on the team. Screenwriter Sarah Höss, who wrote two episodes for House of Dragons, The Princess and the Queen and Green Light, will also continue to work. It must be admitted that it was these series that were subjected to considerable criticism for deviations from the plot of the books.

It is possible that the details of the script and filming will, according to the good old tradition, be protected as a state secret. Ryan Kondal carefully notes in his interviews that the episodes of the second season are planned to be much more spectacular and the heroes of the action will, of course, be thrown into a meat grinder, which will resemble the best moments of Game of Thrones.

The heroes themselves, perhaps, will be much more. In the first season, viewers did not see all the children claiming royal titles according to the literary source. Apparently, they decided to keep these characters and will probably show in the second season. In the realities of the first season, the dragons had nowhere to turn around and show all their crushing power. According to rumors, there are more fire-breathing monsters in the new series. There will even be some shortage of horsemen who will be recruited among the vassals.

Filming, according to some reports, should begin next spring, and the premiere of the second season is likely to be postponed to 2024. In total, four seasons are planned to be released under the House of the Dragon brand.
