The exclusion of the Union of Journalists of Russia from the international federation will be considered at the end of February

During the meeting of the executive committee of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), which will be held on February 22, representatives of the organization will consider the suspension of membership in it of the Union of Journalists of Russia (UJR). The reason for initiating the suspension of membership was the opening of branches of the UJR in the Donbass, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.

The organization’s press release states that on February 9, the IFJ administrative committee will consider the report of the organization’s secretary general on the activities of the IFJ. After that, the executive committee at an extraordinary session on February 22 may suspend the membership of the UJR in the federation.

“In October, the UJR created four branches in the regions of Ukraine annexed by Russia. The IFJ issued a statement condemning the move. The IFJ Executive Committee has unanimously adopted a proposal… giving effect to Article 16 of the IFJ Bylaws, which could lead to the suspension and eventual exclusion of the member organization,” reads the material IFJ.

The federation issued a statement on the suspension of the UJR membership against the backdrop of discontent representatives of Denmark, Iceland, Norway and Finland regarding the activities of the organization on three issues – “Russia, transparency and democracy”. Trade unions in four countries have announced their intention to leave the IFJ if the organization does not take action to remedy the situation.

According to the head of the UJR Volodymyr Solovyov, the exclusion of the union from the IFJ is an initiative of “two Ukrainian unions”, which were supported by representatives of other countries.
