Today, December 18, European Commission reported about the beginning of an investigation against the social network X (formerly Twitter). The regulator, among other things, is going to examine whether X violated requirements for removing illegal content, as well as whether the company is doing enough to combat manipulation and disinformation on the platform.
This investigation is the first adopted Last year, the EU introduced the Digital Services Act (DSA). The DSA is part of a larger process to reform the EU’s internet regulatory regime. It is also part of accepted last year the Digital Markets Act.
According to media reports, the investigation may be related to X’s behavior after the attack by militants of the Palestinian radical Hamas movement on Israel on October 7. Then European Commissioner for the Internal Market Thierry Breton sent X owner Elon Musk demanded that he remove misinformation from the platform, saying that the social network is being used to spread illegal content and false information amid the crisis in the Middle East. Mr. Musk, in response to this, asked the European Commissioner to give specific examples of disinformation in X and list the violations. X said today that it is complying with the DSA and co-operating with the regulator following the launch of its investigation.
