The European Commission (EC) has announced the first tender for the joint purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) within the EU energy platform. The EC is going to buy 11.6 billion gas. This was announced by the Deputy Chairman of the EC Maros Shefcovic.
“I am pleased to announce that today the European Commission launched the first series of tenders for the joint purchase of liquefied natural gas through the new European energy platform. The market response is positive, 107 companies have joined the tenders. Today, as part of the first tender, 77 companies have placed total requests for 11.6 billion cubic meters of gas,” said Mr. Šefčović
According to him, the first round of bidding will be open until May 15. It will cover gas supplies from June 2023 to May 2024.
In October 2022, the EC proposed measures to curb gas prices in Europe. Among the proposals are to introduce dynamic pricing for gas and to oblige countries to share gas with each other. The EC proposal was not approved by all countries. That same month, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo informedthat the EU is considering creating a cartel for gas purchases. March in EC reportedthat they plan to form a cartel for gas purchases by April.
