The European Commission fined Intel €376 million for monopolism – Kommersant

Today the European Commission reported on the re-imposition of a fine on the American corporation Intel for “abuse of a dominant position in the computer chip market.” The fine amounts to €376.36 million. In 2009, the European Commission already imposed for the same reason, a fine against Intel in the amount of €1.06 billion.
After a two-year investigation, the European regulator found that Intel provided deep discounts on its processors to Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo and NEC, and also paid them for delays in the production of computers using chips from rival AMD. But last year Intel managed appeal the 2009 decision to the European Court of General Jurisdiction in Luxembourg, which overturned the fine.
However, the European Commission continues to insist that Intel abused its dominant position in the chip market, noting that the European court’s decision makes reference to such behavior in general. “The lower fine in today’s decision reflects a narrower range of violations than in the 2009 decision,” the European Commission said in a statement today.
Intel’s reaction to the new fine in the EU has not yet been reported.
