The EU increased coal imports ahead of a ban on its supplies from Russia

The countries of the European Union (EU) have increased coal imports in anticipation of an embargo on its supplies from Russia, which will come into force on August 10. In March-May 2022, the EU bought 28% more coal than in the same period last year. Deliveries amounted to 29.4 million tons, according to Vedomosti’s calculations based on UN Comtrade data. In monetary terms, deliveries in March-May increased by 3.9 times to $9.3 billion. Thus, the average price of imported coal was about $317/t against $105/t in March-May 2021.
According to UN Comtrade, the main importers of coal were Germany, Poland, Spain, Italy and the Netherlands. Most of the deliveries (31% in monetary terms) come from Russia, other major exporters during this period were Australia (12%), the USA (12%) and Colombia (10%).
