The Oscar for Best Documentary went to the film Navalny by American director Daniel Roer. He filmed the film from the moment opposition politician Alexei Navalny woke up from a coma at the Berlin Charité until his return to Russia in January 2021. The ceremony was attended by the politician’s wife Yulia, along with her daughter Daria and son Zakhar.
The film was shot on the Max Original platform and with the support of CNN. The film won the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). In addition, she took the award at Sundance as the favorite of the festival and received the audience award there. Other nominees for Best Documentary at the Oscars were Volcano of Love directed by Sarah Dosa, House of Chips (Simon Lereng Vilmont), Everything That Breathes (Shaunak Sen), All Beauty and Bloodshed (Laura Poitras ).
Navalny is currently serving a term in a strict regime colony No. 6 in Melehovo, Vladimir Region. In February 2021, he was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison in the Yves Rocher case. In 2022, he was sentenced to nine years under the article on fraud (part 4 of article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation) and insulting participants in the trial (part 1 and part 2 of article 297 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Nine years is the term for the totality of all punishments.
