The court reduced the size of the fine of the European Commission for Google to 4.125 billion euros

The American corporation Google almost completely lost the appeal filed with the European court of general jurisdiction in the case of abuse of a dominant position in the market of operating systems for mobile devices. As a result of this case, the European Commission imposed a record fine of 4.34 billion euros on the company. As a result of today’s meeting, the court decided to reduce the amount of the fine by 5% – to 4.125 billion euros, it published on the website of the court.
At the same time, the court generally upheld the decision of the European Commission from 2018, according to which Google imposed illegal restrictions on manufacturers of mobile phones based on Android and mobile operators in order to strengthen the dominant position of its search engine.
In particular, the European Commission accused Google is that the company, as a condition for access to the Google Play app store, forced smartphone manufacturers to pre-install services and applications from Google, including the Chrome browser. In addition, it became known that the company, according to the European Commission, paid bribes to smartphone manufacturers to install its browser.
Another point of accusation against Google was that it prescribed a condition in contracts with gadget manufacturers that prohibited the latter from using operating systems based on the open source Android, in particular, Fire OS from Amazon.
According to the European Commission for 2018, the Android operating system is installed in more than 80% of smartphones around the world. Google’s practice has solidified its position in Internet search and has prevented other mobile browsers from competing with Chrome, thus discouraging other operating systems from appearing.
In October of the same year, Google decided challenge this decision and filed an appeal with the European Union Court of General Jurisdiction. The company can also challenge today’s decision.
