The European Commission has come up with a number of proposals to overcome the energy crisis in the European Union. In particular, she believes that the countries of the union should strive to reduce energy consumption by 10% by the end of March 2023. In addition, it is proposed to oblige the EU states to reduce energy consumption by 5% during “peak hours”.
What else offers EC:
- Introduce income limits for electricity producers with low cost of power generation (coal, renewable and nuclear power plants). This could bring in up to €117 billion a year.
- Introduce a “solidarity contribution to excess profits” from activities in the oil, gas, coal and oil refining sectors.
- It is proposed to collect profits, which in 2022 exceeded the growth of 20% in relation to the average for the past three years. This could bring about €25 billion.
In the European Commission’s plan, there are no proposals to limit prices for Russian gas, although such an option discussed. In July the EU agreed plan to reduce gas demand by 15% in the coming winter. At the end of August EC announcedthat will take emergency measures to reduce electricity prices.
