The court fined Telegram for the first time for refusing to localize data in Russia

The World Court imposed a fine of 50,000 rubles on the Telegram messenger. for refusing to localize the data of Russian users in the Russian Federation. About it informs TASS.
The company was found guilty under Part 5 of Art. 13.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (failure to comply with the requirement to clarify personal data). The maximum penalty under the article for legal entities is up to 90,000 rubles. It is specified that representatives of Telegram did not appear in court.
This is the first Telegram fine for such an offense. Previously, the court fined for refusing to localize the data of Spotify, Apple, WhatsApp, Match Group (owns Tinder), Airbnb, Google, Twitch, Pinterest, etc.
According to the law on personal data of 2015, companies are required to store the data of Russians in databases located on the territory of Russia. In case of violation of the law, the service may be blocked. In particular, in 2016, for refusing to comply with the requirements, the social network LinkedIn was included in the register of violators of the law on personal data. In 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law imposing fines for this offense.
