Completion of work on the construction of the Icebreaker-7 icebreaker for the seaports of the North-Western Basin has been postponed from the end of 2024 to 2028. This was announced by the Ministry of Transport at the request of the head of the Federation Council committee on economic policy Andrei Kutepov. The agency cited sanctions as the reason.
The cost of the project is estimated at 10.5 billion rubles. The ministry clarified that the technical readiness of the icebreaker is 1.38%, the keel has already been laid. “In connection with the imposed sanctions and refusals of suppliers, the design documentation of the vessel under construction is being revised with a focus on domestic suppliers of equipment and materials,” the Ministry of Transport said in a response (quoted by TASS).
The Icebreaker-7 icebreaker with a capacity of 18 MW is designed for escorting and towing large-capacity vessels, as well as for cargo transportation. In addition, the ship is capable of conducting ice reconnaissance and search and rescue operations using an unmanned aerial system.
Kommersant reportedthat the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Transport in 2021 were considering an increase in the cost of building an icebreaker from 10.5 billion to 14.5 billion rubles, and the deadlines could be shifted to mid-autumn 2026. An icebreaker for Rosmorport is being built by the Vyborg Shipyard.
