Only a Georgian priest, who had specially flown from Tbilisi to Moscow to sing his friend’s funeral, uttered the word “tick”.

Sergei Seregin spent his last hours in the Moscow Infectious Diseases Hospital, where he ended up after returning from Georgia, where he filmed a documentary about the causes of aggression, about where it comes from in a person. Literally a day after the film expedition, the temperature jumped under forty. According to preliminary information, death was associated either with mouse fever or with a tick bite. They hoped for an autopsy, but it also clarified nothing. Perhaps the transferred covid did its terrible deed.

Vladyko Nikolai, who buried Sergei in the Moscow Church of the Great Martyr George the Victorious in Georgia, says: “Sergey’s wife, Victoria, called me, asking what it could be. We all began to explore. There was a tick there. I had one too, but nothing. There is a medical certificate stating that they cannot determine the cause of death. There is a Georgian proverb that death said that one person cannot be killed, so as not to be blamed on another. I don’t know why God took him? After that, he began to think that Sergei left a legacy. He contributed to the cinema, but even more – to human relations. Despite such grief, joy prevails in me, connected with the fact that I knew such a person and can call him my friend. Last year he contacted me and said he was making a film about aggression. Sergei recorded me in Moscow and came to Georgia the other day.”

Friends recalled that Sergei was a lucky man. When he went on a business trip to the remote village of Taimyr to film a report on the culture of small peoples, the pilot who delivered him said that there was half an hour for everything. If you’re late, you’ll stay for six months. In half an hour, it was necessary to film both folk crafts and creative teams. The ladder was already raised when the group ran up to the plane. We did it! Celebrate the New Year with your families. Sergey and Valery were filming a film in Afghanistan for one of the anniversaries of the withdrawal of troops. They captured a wrecked Soviet tank, on which an Afghan was sitting with a welding machine and sawing off the hatch. And then the escort shouted: “Stop! Now go back in your tracks. It’s a minefield.” Removed and survived. Luck!

All night and all morning on the eve of farewell, it rained, streams of water rushed through the streets. It seemed that no one would come to say goodbye, but many of Sergey’s colleagues gathered at the Cinema House – Alexey Demin, Igor Kovalev, Marina Kurchevskaya, Oleg Uzhinov, Elena Chernova, Sofia Kravtsova, Alexei Alekseev, the color of our animation. Many came in rubber boots – otherwise it was impossible to get through. Someone came from St. Petersburg and Novosibirsk. Sergey’s elderly mother courageously held her back, did not utter a word. Children came, not so old as not to need the help of their father. They are very similar to Sergei and are just entering an independent life. The soft voice of a baby could be heard in the hall. It was Sergei’s tiny daughter, who was born less than six months ago. Her mother Victoria breastfed her. The little brother, who is not even three years old, was taken to a kindergarten.

The farewell ceremony was led by the poet, actor and playwright Vadim Zhuk. He talked about the threads that connected us all with the “ordinary extraordinary man” Sergei Seregin. “This is a wild, ridiculous accident,” he called the incident. Death missed. Maybe she was aiming at another, but our faithful comrade got caught. Many talked about the “wrong death”. Every time, at parting, you learn so much unexpected and valuable about people whom you have known sometimes for 20-30 years. Many have rediscovered Sergey Seregin for themselves. He went through so much, even a minefield, and survived. And suddenly this! Some mysterious “unspecified reasons”.
