The car market in Russia fell by 63.1% in January, the Association of European Businesses (AEB) reported. In volume terms, more than half of all cars sold were Lada. But the situation to a greater extent reflects a supply crisis – sales of brands not from China or traditional domestic players are increasingly insignificant. In addition, the statistics do not take into account the Chinese Chery, which, according to the results of last year, occupied almost 8% of the market.
Sales of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in Russia in January fell by 63.1%, to 32.5 thousand units, follows from AEB data (.pdf). January is traditionally a low season for auto sales, but this year the situation is complicated by a shortage of supply on the market.
In fact, only Chinese and domestic brands have stable supplies. However, the latter never returned the pre-crisis line. Stocks of European, Japanese and Korean stamps are exhausted.
Among brands, Lada remains the market leader, sales of which turned out to be only 3% less than a year earlier (17.5 thousand units). As a result, AvtoVAZ vehicles accounted for 53.7% of the total market volume in January. Next comes Haval (a drop in growth by 43%, to 4.5 thousand units) – the only foreign brand whose plant has continued to produce in Russia since the beginning of the crisis. In third place is another brand from China – Geely, its sales increased immediately by 88%, to 3.5 thousand cars.
Domestic GAZ reduced sales by 32%, to 1.8 thousand units, and the traditional bestseller among foreign cars Kia – by 89%, to 1.4 thousand units, dropping to fifth place. UAZ also managed to sell more than a thousand cars (almost 1.2 thousand), reducing sales by 11%, while other brands could not reach this value. The monthly data does not take into account the sales of BMW and Mercedes-Benz, as well as Chery and its sub-brands, which report only quarterly. At the end of 2022, Chery Group brands occupied 7.8% of the market compared to 2.5% in 2021.
It should be noted that in 2022 the market decreased by almost 59%, to 0.69 million cars. In 2023 at the AEB expect growth of the market of new cars by 12%, up to 0.77 million cars.
