The car market in July reached a record 95 thousand cars since February 2022

The passenger car market in July turned out to be 2.7 times higher than a year earlier, and 16% more than in June, showing a record almost 95.7 thousand cars sold. The weakening of the ruble and the expectation of an increase in utility fees from August 1, which lead to an increase in price lists, revived the market in its traditionally low summer period. There were no changes in the leaders of sales – this is the domestic Lada, as well as concerns from China Chery, Geely and Haval.

Sales of new cars in July increased by 2.7 times, up to 95.65 thousand units, calculated by Avtostat based on the data of the Electronic Passport. The market continues to recover from the collapse in sales in 2022 – the result of the past month is 16.1% higher than in June (82.4 thousand pieces). The result of July is the best since February 2022, when 99.1 thousand cars were sold.

Back in early June “b” expected maintaining demand at around 80,000 cars during the summer months, but market conditions have changed since then. Thus, demand in July was fueled by the expectation of an increase in car prices due to the weakening of the ruble and raise salvage collection from 1 August. Traditionally, during such periods, the demand for cars at old prices is activated.

It should be noted that with such dynamics of sales in the next months, the positive forecast of Avtostat may come true, and by the end of the year 1 million cars will be sold in the Russian Federation.

Traditionally sold the most cars in July AvtoVAZ (27.4 thousand cars, which is 2.6 times higher than a year earlier). However, the share of the Russian concern decreased slightly and amounted to 28.6% in July against 29.2% in July 2022. AvtoVAZ expects to retain a 40% market share by the end of the year, but the concern has traditionally focused on the market of cars officially supplied to the Russian Federation.

In the statistics of Avtostat, parallel imports are also taken into account – for example, the top 10 sales include Toyota (2.3 thousand sold cars), official deliveries of which to the Russian Federation are not carried out, and the plant in the Russian Federation was transferred first to NAMI, and from the latter to Almaz-Antey. In addition, AvtoVAZ itself gives another sales result in July is 29.4 thousand units, since it focuses on data received from dealers. The same data is used by the Association of European Businesses.

Remains a bestseller among foreign cars Chery (sales growth by 4.1 times, up to 10.7 thousand units). Next come Geely (growth by 3.8 times, up to 8.8 thousand pieces) and Haval (almost 4 times, up to 8.5 thousand pieces). At the same time, Haval overtook Geely in sales in previous months – Andrey Akifiev, head of Haval Motor Rus told “Kommersant” that the local production in the Russian Federation (the only own plant among Chinese brands) is not enough to cover the needs of the market and the concern partially imports cars from China.

According to the results of January-July, 497.2 thousand cars were sold in the Russian Federation, according to Avtostat. This is 28.2% more than a year earlier. And here in the top 3 are Lada (161.9 thousand units), Chery (57.9 thousand units) and Haval (47.1 thousand units).
