The buyer of the assets of the Swedish retailer IKEA, lumber manufacturer LLC Luzales, is considering the option of producing school and children’s furniture. About it informed Ruslan Semenyuk, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Luzales, writes RBC.

“I would like to see desks and chairs made of solid wood in schools, in all our schools and kindergartens. <...> A student puts down a backpack or sits down and the edges of furniture made from compressed waste crumble, then you touch things and it all breaks, it turns out uncomfortable, ”Semenyuk said, drawing attention to the fact that chipboard furniture quickly becomes unusable.

According to him, the company will start working on creating a technology model that will make solid wood furniture competitive. It is specified that the release of new products will take place in 2-3 months, for this a new brand will be created.

On March 4, 2022, IKEA temporarily closed stores in Russia amid a Russian special operation in Ukraine, logistical problems and sanctions. In mid-June, it became known that the company was looking for buyers for its four factories in Russia, as well as reducing staff and selling off the rest of the goods. February 16 Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Viktor Evtukhov named buyers of three IKEA factories in Russia (two factories were merged into one, so the deal covered three factories). They were Slotex, which specializes in kitchen worktops and facades, as well as Luzales. The details of the deal were not specified.

The sale of two IKEA manufacturing assets to Luzales closed in March. Semenyuk did not disclose the exact amount of the transaction, but noted that it was about several billion rubles. According to 2021 data, Luzales’ revenue amounted to 8.4 billion rubles, and net profit – 2.3 billion rubles. Earlier, Semenyuk added that the deal would be financed from the company’s own funds. He also noted that the deal does not provide for a buyback option.
