Russian TV channels are increasingly returning to the hits of the 2000s. Thus, it became known that the continuation of the series “Happy Together” will be released as a full-length film. TNT is launching the project into development in 2024, it will talk about the Bukin family. This was reported by TASS with reference to director and screenwriter Andrei Nikiforov. True, before this, the channel will also release an updated series about the life of the main characters of the show; the first episodes of the project will be released on December 18. Earlier it became known about the restart of other popular shows of the 2000s, for example, in 2024 the sequel “Don’t Be Born Beautiful” will be released, and in September 2023 the updated “Daddy’s Daughters” premiered on STS.
What is the reason behind the massive reboot of the TV show? Producer of the Lunapark film company Dmitry Nelidov believes that among the main reasons is the lack of new ideas: “The problem is not that these are projects from the nineties or zeros, but that there is a certain paucity of concepts, but something needs to be done.
A good option is to restart projects that were once very successful. Because circumstances and trends change, and everything can be refreshed.
This way it will look fresh, and the drama engine is already there, the story has been written, why not?
At the same time, there is always a certain percentage of the audience that ages along with the channel. But mostly viewers aged 14-44 will watch such shows. For example, is the success of the series “The Boy’s Word” due to nostalgia or is it a matter of time? We won’t answer for sure.”
On the other hand, the Russian audience really has a request for a return to the 2000s, but this trend will quickly pass, film critic Ivan Afanasyev is sure: “Obviously, there is a strong nostalgia for those times. After all, many associate the 2000s with a rather calm time: the nineties were over, money finally appeared, some more or less adequate television and projects that people wanted to watch.
If we talk specifically about “Happy Together,” then if it is made as a film that will be shown on TV or on streaming, then in general it will have some kind of audience. If they want to release the project in cinemas, then this is an absolutely disastrous story, unless they spend a completely ridiculous amount of 10 million rubles on its creation. These are the box office receipts this film can earn.
On TV and streaming, such a movie can gather some kind of audience who will drop by out of curiosity. But overall this is a one-time story. At the same time, for example, “Streets of Broken Lanterns”, “Gangster Petersburg” or “Brigade” are not being restarted now.
Light, kind, family comedies are returning, capable of attracting people who want to calm down a little and remember how it was.
That is, there really is some kind of trend now, but I don’t think it’s sustainable, it will pass pretty soon. The producers will look at this story and say: “We got some kind of benefit from this, now let’s do something more interesting and less disposable.”
Other cult projects of the 2000s that will be relaunched in 2024 include, for example, the reality show “Star Factory.” As TNT reported, the first participants will spend three months as part of it – during this time they will be taught the basics of show business. Every week the musicians will have to present three new songs on the air of the project.
