Rostec’s AYYA T1 smartphone will come pre-installed with the Russian NashStore application marketplace: the companies have agreed to cooperate. But from 2023 on all smartphones that are shipped to the Russian Federation, a store from VK – RuStore should also be installed. MTS, which is also developing its store, declares its readiness to install the store on any device at the request of the user. A smartphone from Rostec is a niche product, and the diversity of Russian stores is unlikely to be a factor in market advancement, experts say.
AYYA T1 smartphones (developed by Smartecosystem, part of Rostec) will be pre-installed with the Russian NashStore app store, a representative of the marketplace told Kommersant. According to Vladimir Zykov, director of project activities at Digital Platforms (developed by NashStore), pre-installation of NashStore will allow the company to acquire new users and increase earnings from sales of digital goods: “This stimulates additional interest of application developers in our site.”
For the first time, AYYA T1 went on sale in October 2021 in M.Video-Eldorado stores. Then the developer of the device stated that the smartphone was planned to be transferred to the Russian OS “Aurora” and the Russian mobile processor “Skif” from the Elvis Research and Production Center, but this did not happen (see “Kommersant” dated October 28, 2021).
The domestic application store NashStore appeared in response to sanctions and the removal of some Russian applications from the Apple and Google stores in mid-May (see “Kommersant” dated May 15). According to NashStore, now it has 3.5 thousand applications that have been downloaded more than 10 million times.
Smartecosystem clarified that devices with NashStore run on the Android operating system, where Google Play is also present. According to a company representative, the gadgets “are produced both in Russia and abroad.”
According to the interlocutor of “Kommersant” in the electronics market, AYYA T1 is produced in Chinese contract manufacturing. Smartphones will be supplied to both consumer and corporate segments, Smartecosystem says.
On the AYYA smartphone, in addition to NashStore, there will also be the second Russian marketplace from VK – RuStore. In early November, the Ministry of Digital Development included it in the list of mandatory applications for pre-installation on all devices imported in 2023. (see “Kommersant” dated November 10). Smartecosystem assured that AYYA will fully comply with the law. The Mintsifra and VK declined to comment.
MTS (AppBazar) also develops its own marketplace. MTS noted: “AppBazar is installed at the request of the client on any subscriber devices.”
After the start of the military operation in Ukraine and the departure of leading vendors from the Russian market, the AYYA smartphone failed in retail sales, so from January to March, only 370 devices were sold in the amount of 6.7 million rubles. M.Video told Kommersant that the demand for the device is “niche”: “The device is relevant mainly for the corporate sector, where information protection is important, or for ordinary users who want to make communication safer.” According to the CEO of TelecomDaily Denis Kuskov, the pre-installation of Russian marketplaces will not help increase AYYA sales, since “more than 90% of all the applications needed by the user are on Google Play”, the Rostec smartphone does not surpass Chinese competitors in terms of technical characteristics, and its price is higher.
